Harvard graduate uses environmental knowledge to launch a small business
Obie Iwuchukwu started Redox Environmatics after graduating from Harvard University with a Master's in Environmental Management. The company specializes in environmental consulting and waste management. In 2019, Obie approached the SBDC for help developing a strategic plan. Working together, the SBDC and Obie developed an action plan to reposition the business and ensure the firm's ongoing viability. We focused on securing new sources of revenue targeting construction and demolition opportunities. Part of the strategy was to obtain certifications to assist procurement opportunities. Redox has increased revenue directly due to this effort by securing subcontracting contracts with schools, government agencies, and airport expansion.

The Lubbock SBDC assisted Lisa Stane and her Non-Profit Organization, Sharp Academy, by informing Lisa on how to apply for the EIDL loan, how to fill out the application, and discussed the rules of the loan agreement, eligible and ineligible uses of funds, etc. The Lubbock SBDC also aided Lisa and the Sharp Academy with the PPP loan, how to apply for the loan, what would be required for loan forgiveness, and helping with the forgiveness process. This assistance saved 15 jobs. These programs helped Sharp Academy continue to do what it does best: provide college prep education for any student, including young people with learning disabilities such as dyslexia and ADHD, who still have above-average learning capabilities.

Espinal advised her to refinance the property to an SBA 7(a), so she can get terms on the property loan and borrow some start-up capital to assist with obtaining needed equipment. Espinal also provided guidance and resources with business planning, financing, and business management. Complete Health Care Clinic has taken off and done well. The Clinic provides health care to those in need, whether homebound, ambulatory, or in rural areas. This business was recognized at the 2022 Annual Small Business Awards Banquet as a minority small business.

Julie Rondan combined empathy with an entrepreneurial spark to launch “Open Eyes Life Coaching and Consulting,” which provides life and career coaching for those with disabilities. Julie's visual impairment drove her to provide the professional guidance she wishes she had been offered when she was younger. Her UTSA SBDC Business Advisor assisted Julie with strategic planning, marketing, pricing, referrals to industry groups, and government contracting. Said Julie, "My SBDC Advisor cares about people, especially business owners who are disabled." Julie now hosts a Texas Diabetes Institute support group and was appointed to the Ride Connected Texas Board.
